  • Planning SOTM Diversity and Inclusion session

Draft Blog post:

For the second year in a row, the Diversity network of OSMF hosted a session to talk about gender and diversity. We convened an open space for people to share experiences and suggest potential next steps.  With over 50 participants, we shared in a circled space.

Event Organization

It would be helpful to have 'office hours' or 'mentor help' for 1st time talk/session submitters. This will help bridge for new partcipants.

If there is a research or session about a region, eg the continent of Africa, it might be better to include someone from the continent in the planning.

Having quiet spaces for different people is helpful in such a loud complex event.

Governance

The majority of the working groups and board seats are not held and include poeple from specific regions of the world. There is a gap in participation
There are 4 board seats open for December 2019. We encourage people to apply. Please do reach out to learn more from current or past board members.

Background:
"The OSM community is global and diverse. Building on last year's Open Heroines conversation, we will co-create a space for OSM to talk about how to improve diversity and inclusion in our amazing project. All welcome. "

How can OSM be more diverse and inclusive? Join us to share your lessons and ideas on how we might grow and support a Diversity and Inclusive approach in OSM. This is an activity taking place across other 'open' communities.

We will ask participants to co-create plans and identify how we might  incorporate it into small and big activities within the global network.

The format will be co-created with some potential outcomes. The goal is to  be a conversation with interactive, participatory methods and some small  group work.

Format (Recommendation from the Diversity and Inclusion mailing list)

Depending on the room and number of people, you may be able to do breakout sessions.
- Groups of 3-5 people
-  One notetaker in each to capture the conversation. I have found it  helpful to prepare a google doc that everyone can collaboratively write  in (assuming your participants bring laptops).
-  You need clear instructions and structure for what you want the groups  to discuss and work on. The goal could be to make recommendations on how  OSM can become more diverse and inclusive.

The structure of the 60-minute session could be:
-  5 minutes introduction to the session and why topic is important (what are other communities doing, what are recent surveys showing...)
- 5 minutes of what has been tried and what has worked or not worked in OSM community
- 5 minutes instructions for groups and forming groups
- 30 minutes breakout sessions
- 10 minutes reports from each group
- 5 minutes closing thoughts and next steps
